Sesbania is renowned for its phenomenal biomass production capacity. Under favorable conditions, sesbania can produce 15-30 tons of fresh biomass per hectare (3-6 tons dry matter) in just 45-60 days — one of the highest biomass accumulation rates among any agricultural crop.
To maximize biomass production, sow sesbania at 30-40 kg seed per hectare in closely spaced rows (20-25 cm). Adequate soil moisture during the first two weeks is critical for good establishment. Once established, sesbania grows rapidly without irrigation in areas receiving 500+ mm rainfall during the growing season.
Biomass quality peaks at the 50% flowering stage, when the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is optimal (approximately 20:1) for rapid decomposition and nitrogen release. Delaying incorporation beyond full flowering reduces nitrogen mineralization efficiency as stems become woody and lignified.
