High germination rate is the most critical quality parameter for sesbania seeds. Fresh, properly processed seeds typically achieve 85-95% germination within 5-7 days under optimal conditions (25-30°C soil temperature, adequate moisture). Scarified or acid-treated seeds can reach near-100% germination.

Sesbania seeds have a hard seed coat that can cause dormancy, resulting in lower germination rates for untreated seeds (60-75%). Mechanical scarification — scratching the seed coat with abrasive materials — or hot water treatment (80°C for 3 minutes) effectively breaks dormancy and improves germination uniformity.
